The National Flag of Spain: A Symbol of History and National Pride

A Rich Heritage

The Spanish flag, known as the "Bandera de España," has been the official national flag since the Constitution of 1978. It symbolizes the country's history, values, and aspirations.

Three Horizontal Stripes

The flag consists of three horizontal stripes of equal width, arranged from top to bottom in the colors red, yellow, and red. The colors represent the blood of patriots, the gold of Spain's colonial era, and the passion and vitality of its people.

The Coat of Arms

Off-centered to the left on the yellow stripe is the Coat of Arms of Spain, a symbol of the country's monarchy and unity. The Coat of Arms features the Pillars of Hercules, representing the Strait of Gibraltar, the Lion of Castile, the Castles of Castille, the Pomegranate of Granada, and the Cross of Burgundy.

Private Display

Within Spain, private citizens are permitted to display the flag freely without any restrictions. However, there are specific protocols for official use and display, including proper hoisting and flying procedures.
