In a thrilling encounter at Eden Gardens, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) emerged victorious over Punjab Kings (PBKS) in the 53rd match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. Stand-in captain Sam Curran of PBKS won the toss and chose to field first.
KKR got off to a strong start, with openers Venkatesh Iyer and Nitish Rana putting on a 65-run partnership. However, PBKS bowlers made a comeback, with Liam Livingstone claiming three wickets in quick succession. Skipper Shreyas Iyer then steadied the innings with a gritty 45 off 32 deliveries.
In reply, PBKS struggled to chase down the target of 170 runs set by KKR. Opener Jonny Bairstow was dismissed early, and the middle order failed to provide any substantial contributions. Despite a valiant effort from Jitesh Sharma (38), PBKS fell short by 22 runs.
Andre Russell was the standout performer for KKR with both bat and ball. He scored a quickfire 25 off 12 deliveries and picked up three wickets with his pace bowling. Umesh Yadav also impressed with two crucial wickets.
With this victory, KKR consolidates its position in the top four of the IPL 2024 standings. PBKS, meanwhile, remains at the bottom of the table after suffering its sixth consecutive defeat.
